We spent the last four years of running an industry body focused on addressing the environmental and social impacts of the infrastructure which powers our digital world: digital infrastructure. During this period we learned:

With the advent of an oligopoly of cloud infrastructure providers, there is an increasing economic entrenchment which requires constantly more software, more digitalization to fuel the never-ending growth hunger of cloud infrastructure companies, who sell the resources needed by the digital economy.

One of the most powerful tools we have developed over the last years is a systems-perspective & taxonomy which maps the digital world. This perspective allows us to have meaningful conversations about each individual part, zoom-out to a systems-level and observe consequences & effects. We use this systems-perspective and taxonomy across all our work, be it in tailoring policy briefs, capacity-building or shaping a Leitmotiv. We have holistic view on the digital world which is unique to our organization.

At Leitmotiv, we continuously identify and map the gaps between our co-created Leitmotiv for a digital future and the current reality. We raise awareness for those gaps by releasing an annual report and by deploying modern communication techniques. We create platforms around those gaps, giving a voice to experts with expertise on how to address these gaps, to stakeholders who are directly affected, and to policymakers who are working to close them. These awareness activities help to create political will and momentum around specific gaps, driving momentum toward the Leitmotiv. Most importantly our gap analysis provides an up-to-date agenda for policymakers and governments to act upon and to understand what they need to address to operationalize the values of citizens in the digital world.
