Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the project aims to develop a new energy-performance metric that brings underutilized servers into focus. With this metric, IT and cloud infrastructure operators can better identify energy losses in their infrastructure – unlocking the full potential of their IT assets. As part of the development, the metric will be deployed in two real-world data centers - a supercomputer at the University of Paderborn and a cloud operator, X-Ion. We will test and monitor the effectiveness of the metric and develop the operational practices and guidelines for a broader application. Assuming the tests are successful, the project aims to integrate SIEC into established standards such as EN 50600 and ISO 30134. The overarching goal is simple. To identify energy losses through underutilizing and offer IT & cloud infrastructure operators a metric that can help them unlock more value from their assets.
